Hey there!

My name’s Sandy Salierno and I love making clothes!

Apple Oak Fibre Works Rhubarb Dye Kit

Apple Oak Fibre Works Rhubarb Dye Kit

I know that I love all the Apple Oak Fibre Works Kits, but I think I love this one a lot extra.

Rhubarb is such a cool plant. Obviously you can eat the stems, but apparently the leaves are a great mordant, and, as I learned, the roots make an absolutely stunning dye.

The yellow is the straight rhubarb root, and the pink and green are from two separate moderators.

Basically, this kit packed a huge punch.

As per all of the Apple Oak Fibre Works kits, this one was super easy to follow. The directions on these are truly a dream. I used their Turin base, a wool/silk/ramie blend and cold-mordanted it overnight. I find a cold mordant gentler on the fibre and makes for a much softer yarn.

While washing the dye out of the yarn I think I wasn’t careful enough to keep the skeins separate and ended up with a bit of speckling on the pink skein. I’m a bit perturbed but not super disappointed about it. Definitely keep an eye out for this if you’re washing skeins in the same bucket!

All up I’d definitely recommend this and any of the Apple Oak Fibre Works kits to start you on your natural dye journey. If you already have rhubarb growing in your garden (why does everyone already have rhubarb growing though?!) you can buy just the recipe card from them and source your own ingredients.

I’ve also made a video to go along with this post!
